Yuzhnaya Street is located in the central district of city Dnepr. The implemented boulevard is a continuation of the previously formed pedestrian boulevard Ekaterinoslavsky.

Yuzhny Boulevard is longitudinally divided into three zones: transit areas along the line of the building, functionally various zone in the middle (recreation, quiet rest areas, children’s playground). The main landscape dominant of the new pedestrian space is the stream, which stretches across the entire boulevard. It’s also the longest artificial creek in Ukraine. It symbolizes the underground river Zhabokryach, which flows right under the street.

Paving is done in the form of a modular grid (4.8×4.8m), taken from the already realized Ekaterinoslavsky Boulevard for maximum similarity of perception of the existing and projected boulevards.

At the point where the two boulevards “meets” is located 7-meter sculpture – Atlant. Atlant is a mighty titan in Greek mythology, carrying on his shoulders a firmament.

The sculpture represents the gaining freedom, liberation from the burden of iron fetters. This is a moment  of liberation from three main boundaries of life:

Physical freedom. It is symbolized by the torn shackles on their feet.

Social freedom is a freedom from the imposed socio-historical constraints, self-identification – symbolized by the torn cord at the level of the solar plexus.

Internal freedom – the victory over oneself, personal limitations – is embodied by the destroyed fetters at the level of the shoulders-heart-lungs.

Atlantean has broken the chains and takes his first free step. The liberation takes place at the meeting point of the two boulevards, the “past” and the “future”, in the public space of the “agora”. It is a symbol of liberation from limitations, a symbol of self-awakening.

Interesting facts:

The creek is made of solid blocks of local granite fossils that

weigh a total of 150 tons. The length of the creek is 200m (100m were realized in the first stage).

During the construction of the first stage, not a single tree was cut down – instead, 20 new trees were planted.

The biggest bronze sculpture in the city is installed on the boulevard. Its height is 7.2 meters.

At the meeting point of the two boulevards, there was a bridge in the XX century. (crossing Shevchenko Street, Yuzhnaya Street
